“Decide what to be, and go be it.” — The Avett Brothers
A whole seven years later.
July 4, 1776 was only the day the Declaration of Independence was signed and that we made official our intent to fight for independence — not when we actually got it. But that’s what we celebrate anyway.
I never knew that and I f***ing LOVE it.
I love that we, as a nation, today, celebrate the day we declared our intent. We celebrate the idea, the ambition, and the inked decision to be what we wanted to be. It was going to be just because we wanted it to be. It took just over seven years, yes, but we got there.
That vision. That commitment. That steadfast dedication. That belief.
Today, we celebrate those things. The things that eventually led to our independence. Without that will, that heart, and that dedicated and shared vision, it may not have happened.
Somethings are worth going all in for.
I know we all have always been warned to “not get ahead of ourselves,” and to “take things one day at a time,” or however many ways there is to express that idea. But there’s an elegant and profound confidence in holding the commitment to a goal equal to the success of achieving it.
It’s as if we collectively said that once we recognized the vision and declared intent to pursue it, we weren’t going to settle for anything else so it was just a matter of time.
It’s the most profoundly basic entrepreneurial mindset ever.
You’ll see on the Magic Room Brand logo that I list it as established in 2015. In December of that year, I decided to go for it and start building. It wasn’t until October of 2016 when I officially opened the online store, but I still call 2015 the beginning because it was then when I went all in on the idea. It was then when I committed to build the brand and see what we (yes, you and I) could make this into.
Make commitments and celebrate them. It’s great when they end up how we want them to end up, but commitments themselves hold a profound amount of belief, courage, and blind faith that deserve recognition regardless of results.
Intent can be hard to celebrate, but we can make due today with some hot dogs and fireworks.
Happy birthday, America. Thanks for believing in yourself before there was anything to believe in.
