Don’t let not knowing how to do something get in the way of you doing it.
I used to groan at having to go over there to teach her how to use relatively new technology.
“Ugh! I can’t believe you don’t know how to do this!” — Me being a total jerk to my mom
But then I remembered that this was the woman who taught me how to use a f**king spoon. So yeah…I’m on my way over to fix your Wi-Fi.
Love you, Mom.
. . .
Turns out that lack of knowledge is a very temporary — and easily solvable — problem.
It’s only really an obstacle until you realize that you can just learn how to do that thing (whatever it is). Then, pretty much instantly, it ceases to be an obstacle and becomes an opportunity. An opportunity to learn how to do that thing, or at the very least, learn more about said thing.
Is the stud finder joke when I point it at myself and make a “beep beep” noise still funny?
Here’s the deal: I am not handy around the house. Like, at all. If you need someone to write a song about something, I’m your guy. Need a TV mounted to a bracket then drilled into your wall? Literally anyone else is your guy.
But lately, I’ve said screw it (pun half-intended). I’ll figure it out. I mounted a TV to a bracket and drilled it into our wall. Guess what…it’s awesome. I hung Christmas lights up across the front of our house. They looked fresh as hell. I built my wife a raised bed vegetable garden. It’s dope and I’ll probably get some habanero peppers out of it. No, I’m not sharing.
And, I’ve started Magic Room Brand so musicians can finally get quality music gear that is 100% biodegradable. Starting a business is a steady push with a constant stream of decisions that you’ve never faced before, but each day’s “new” issue becomes tomorrow’s lesson learned, so bring that noise on.
Being a beginner is both humbling and empowering at the same time.
Someone smarter than me once told me to always strive to be a beginner. What they meant was that beginners always learn the most, the fastest. They’re sponges that soak in everything. Have kids? Then you know exactly what I mean.
What did you try today?
And Mom, if you’re reading this, then your Wi-Fi is still working.
